The Safety Manual has proved to be a very successful and valuable tool for our field. SES plans for the Safety Manual to be an ongoing project, reissuing the Manual as needed with new sections or updates/changes to existing sections.  The 2nd edition has just been completed and will be issued in May, 2007.

At the 2007 SSSAAP Conference, the first half of the Safety Session focused on "Safe Plan of Action."  Michael Hartman and James Serne asked everyone to fill out a worksheet where they identified a problem or accident they had witnessed or heard about, what caused the accident or problem, what would be the solution(s) or safe plan(s), and what resources would be needed to implement the safe plan or solution.  The results were very interesting.  The results, along with a summary of the session, can be reviewed by clicking here.

Anyone who has the time to check existing sections to ensure the information is up-to-date and correct, or who has the time to write and submit a new section for the manual, should send those contributions to Michael W. Hartman (via email at answers@ipass.net or mail to P. O. Box 12353, Research Triangle Park, NC 27709-2353).

Below are topics that we would like to include in the next version of the SES Safety Manual. Your contribution will be greatly appreciated.

  • Grating Covers
  • Heat Deflectors (Hot Stacks)

Suggested additional topics are:

  • Evacuation from Testing Areas
  • High Pressure Steam Leaks
  • Ice Extrusions

If there are other topics you feel are pertinent, please submit for inclusion in the Safety Manual.

This is YOUR Safety Manual, and your help is needed to keep this critical safety tool up-to-date and relative.  HELP THE SAFETY COMMITTEE  ACHIEVE THIS GOAL !!!

When the Safety Committee issued the SES Safety Manual, the intention was to provide ongoing guidance and support to the membership.

In that light, EPA has graciously agreed to provide a CD to SES for in-house training of field staff. The program on the CD is an interactive training tool that an EPA person must take before going on a test site. I have reviewed several sections and believe this interactive program would be very helpful to our membership.

We also want to keep our Safety Manual current and relevant. Anyone who can help in updating existing sections or submitting new articles should contact me at 919-544-6338 or at answers@ipass.net.
